Week 13
The semester is coming to a close, and I have definitely built entrepreneurial skills that I did not have at the beginning of the course. I entered the class without having taken any business course in the past. It is impressive how much I have learned from the past few weeks on how to build a business, as well as some basic economics. This course has also help me enhance my skills in public speaking, engaging an audience, networking to build the start-up, and teamwork. I especially enjoyed that the class was structured around people from multiple works of life and really modeled a real workplace that would involve people of different backgrounds, work habits, and skill sets.
I very much enjoyed the team building activities that we did with the Lego pieces and the plastic box. The Lego game not only revealed the differing communication method business majors had versus engineering majors, but also allowed myself to recognize that I had to strengthen my communication skills, as that is essential to strong leadership. From the plastic box activity, it helped me better understand how to build a "business," negotiate deals, and to collaborate with my team on growing the business. I was impressed by how we increased our resources exponentially just by confidently pitching ourselves to people and allowing for positive feedback from the people we negotiated with. Moreover, our team recognized that we must follow an ethical code, so we never pressured any employees from the stores we visited to perform a trade. We realized then that our team dynamics were strong as we were all moving along the same trajectory.
I also enjoyed performing the customer interviews and learning how to fit our product to society's needs and to resolve their pains. I recognized how important it is to continue remolding our product and its applications to target the portion of the market that would bring in our revenue. It was also one of the lowlights of the journey, because of the difficulty I had obtaining some information from the customers. Because of how sensitive to security our product was, many people were hesitant in giving me information regarding the company they worked at - thus, we are focusing on building our reputation and establishing trust during the initial stage of the business. I especially enjoyed building towards our pitch, because it helped me recognize all the necessary components of starting a business and emphasized the importance of drilling down to every aspect to clearly define the goals and needs of the startup.
I am excited to pitch to the judges and to take these skills to further explore entrepreneurship!

You've got a good group with strong personalities. Make sure to assert yourself and be heard. We look forward to hearing your final presentation on Tues.
